Changes to Standard Rules Permits introduced.
The Environment Agency have introduced a set of new Standard Rules permits to streamline and tighten up on Standard Rules permitting.
The new Standard Rules permit for general wastes treatment is SR2022 no4, SR2022 No 4: non-hazardous waste recycling with asbestos, hazardous batteries, cable and WEEE storage – GOV.UK, which also now allows storage of asbestos, batteries, cable and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
The new permit replaces the seven following older Standard Rules permits below. This applies both for new applications and also for sites already operating under these older permits.
- SR2008 No 3
- SR2008 No 4
- SR2008 No 7
- SR2008 No 8
- SR2015 No 6
- SR2015 No 10
Changes include a new definition of a building which has become an “enclosed building”, meaning that sheds with 3 sides and a roof are no longer considered suitable for the new Permit. There are also changes to location requirements which may affect an Operator’s ability to comply with the new rules
This applies to current Operators using the old style permits just as much as for new applicants, so, if you are currently operating one of the permits above, you should check if you comply with the new standard rules permit. If not, you must apply to vary your permit into a bespoke permit within 3 months of the date the consolidated standard rules were published (18 December 2024).
